Climate Action
In order to tackle climate change, strategies need to focus on both reducing emission of and stabilising the levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (mitigation) whilst also building the resilience of human and non-human communities to present and future climatic changes (adaptation). Even if all greenhouse gas emissions were ceased today, the emissions already released will remain in the atmosphere for thousands of years, continuing to warm the earth and the oceans which will take a while to respond to the changed atmosphere. Therefore, humanity is already committed to some level of climate change which makes it imperative to have a strategy that adapts to the altered planet as well as mitigating further greenhouse gas emissions.
How we are Helping:
One way to significantly mitigate the impacts of climate change is to avoid the burning of fossil fuels to provide our energy. By burning fossil fuels, a finite resource, we release heat trapping gases into the atmosphere, contributing to warming. To combat this, IHelp Global utilise renewable energy sources, namely wind and solar power. Solar panels and wind turbines can be used to generate electricity to power homes and buildings, provide ample heating and to help store rainwater, maximising water conservation. These techniques are showcased in the Children’s Eco-Village in Tanzania where wind and solar powered water tanks are made from locally sourced, low impact materials, and buildings such as the Eco-Mosque rely entirely on solar panels to provide their electricity.
We should not only be reducing our release of these gases, but we should also be increasing the size of the “sinks” that accumulate and store these greenhouse gases, particularly oceans, trees and soil. Ihelp has been meeting this challenge head-on, helping plant over 30,000 trees and 68,000 saplings in the Children’s Eco Village, using the power of the environment to slow down present climatic changes.
